Our goal is to nurture that curiosity by creating an environment where they can gain new insights and understanding through exploration. We introduce concepts and ideas that extend beyond their daily experience, helping them make connections, ask questions, and see the world in new ways.
What are Academics at TBC all About?
People often underestimate how much young children are capable of understanding. With carefully planned lessons and activities, children can grasp complex ideas because they are actively involved in the learning experience.
Here is an example of children exploring how a flower absorbs water from its environment. They examine the flower, experiment with different colored water, make predictions, and record their observations as the flower changes over time.

Literacy
TBC's literacy program builds reading, writing, and communication through structured, multi-sensory instruction. Children develop phonemic awareness using the Heggerty program, early reading and spelling skills through Lively Letters, and learn through stories, songs, picture cards, and hands-on activities. Writing begins with Handwriting Without Tears, strengthening fine motor control and early letter formation. Communication is nurtured through conversation, Circle Time, dramatic play, storytelling, and performances, helping children grow as confident, expressive, and independent learners.
Math
The Teddy Bear Club’s math program helps children develop number sense, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of relationships among numbers and operations. Teachers use Montessori-based manipulatives, games, literature, songs, hands-on projects, and real-life situations to move children from concrete exploration to abstract thinking. Younger children begin with number names, one-to-one correspondence, shapes, and patterns. As they progress, they explore operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, data analysis, statistics, and probability.
Science
Science at The Teddy Bear Club centers on hands-on exploration, investigation, and discovery. Children study earth and space science, life science, physical science, technology, engineering, health, hygiene, and nutrition through experiments, nature walks, observation, and projects. Activities also support sensory learning, math, and language development.
Environmental awareness is a core value, helping children understand and respect living things while developing responsibility for their community and the planet.
Creative and Performing Arts
The Teddy Bear Club’s creative arts program nurtures self-expression, creativity, confidence, and body awareness through drama, art, music, and movement. Beginning in Petit Jardin, drama activities introduce children to public speaking, improvisation, storytelling, props, dialogue, music, and dance. Later in the year, each Jardin prepares and presents special performances for classmates, teachers, and families.
Art is centered on process rather than product, encouraging children to explore materials, make discoveries, and take pride in their own creative choices. Music is woven into daily life through songs, rhythms, instruments, fingerplays, transitions, and exposure to classical, folk, and jazz themes. Children listen, imitate, sing, move, and share favorite songs with classmates. Movement activities such as dance, yoga, obstacle courses, and parachute play help children build coordination, strength, spatial awareness, and control of their bodies in a joyful, creative environment.
Social Studies
Children are natural-born explorers. Social studies at The Teddy Bear Club helps them move from understanding themselves to learning about family, community, country, and the wider world. Through stories, songs, artifacts, holidays, and family presentations, children celebrate diverse cultures and traditions.
In Grand Jardin and Jardin Maternel, children use passports to “travel” around the world, learning to use maps and globes, locate continents, identify countries and flags, and appreciate global cultures, languages, and traditions.
French
French at The Teddy Bear Club is introduced naturally through daily routines and interactive lessons. Early exposure helps children develop listening comprehension, oral expression, and confidence with a new language. Weekly vocabulary is taught through rhymes, props, French books, and group games. Children often understand French before speaking it, then gradually begin using words and short phrases.
This early language experience also serves as a window into another culture, all while supporting communication, pronunciation, problem-solving, and broader school readiness.
Motor Skills
The Teddy Bear Club supports fine and gross motor development through sensory play, practical life skills, art, and daily physical activity. Children build tactile awareness and hand strength through playdough, finger painting, pouring, squeezing, sorting, coloring, buttoning, zipping, and early writing.
Outdoor play in all seasons helps children develop balance, coordination, strength, confidence, and peer relationships through running, jumping, climbing, throwing, catching, and movement games that encourage both wellness and physical independence.
